Rural scenario:
Agriculture remains one of the key earning mediums for people living in rural India. As per CMIE (Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy) the unemployment rates in the rural India stood at 7.15%. While even those employed earn very measly income. Nearly 60% of India’s rural population lives on an income of less than Rs. 35/day (the average per capita income in the rural regions), while the poorest 10% population survive on less than Rs. 15/day. Moreover, the lack of other better livelihood opportunities in the region makes the situation more complex.
Key challenges:
- Excessive dependence on agriculture. Further, the fragmented farmlands, inability to use modern technologies and farm mechanisation results in poor farm yields
- Lack of basic education and employment skills
- Unwillingness to work and excessive dependence on subsidies or freebies provided by government
- Lack of financing for entrepreneurs
